The Splendors of Spring

With freezing temperatures and 40 cm snowstorms, it’s hard to believe that Spring is around the corner. And yet , it may be that thinking about that is what will keep my spirits up.  Spring is a time for re-birth after the darkness of winter; the spring trends have the same optimism and renewal.  There are so many beautiful trends coming for Spring ; a few that stand out for me are:

Dark Denim

Denim is always a trend. This season, dark denim on denim is in the spotlight.

Fringe and Feathers

Fringe is always fun , frivolous and free and feathers are so light and airy. Takes away the heaviness of winter.

Lavender Love

Lavender is the color of beauty, grace and femininity. It’s considered the “grown up ” version of pink and was in full bloom on the runways.

Fanny Packs

Fanny packs were big in the 80 and then became a tourist staple. Last year, fanny packs were e-bay’s biggest seller.  They continue to be a big trend for Spring 2018.

White Suits

Pants suits have been coming back for the past few seasons. They are easy to wear and very versatile and white suits are no exception. For spring white suits come in all shapes and sizes from fitted to oversized.

Anoraks and Plastic

The new jacket must have for spring is the Anorak. From transparent plastic to bomber style, the anorak is your best choice for outerwear. Its much more appealing than the plastic sheet we run to get when caught in a sudden downpour.

Hilary in White

On Thursday, Hilary Clinton accepted the presidential nomination for the Democratic Party. She delivered her acceptance speech in a white pantsuit. For most people her choice of clothing would have little importance and yet at closer look can be seen as a very calculated thought out move.

This is where color psychology comes to play. Different colors can be used to evoke various emotions without our being aware of it. Color also gives us ideas about the person wearing them. In movies the bad guy is in black while the good guy is in white. So Hilary’s choice of a white suit was not that random.

By wearing a comfortable cut of suit, Hilary was trying to be like the masses. She didn’t want a very tailored suit because she would be seen as elitist and this would not serve well when trying to reach an array of classes and also she wanted to appear to be an open person; you could say a formal informality. She’s saying she can get the job done (business) but is one of the people.

Hilary’s choice of color is very precise. By wearing white, she is appealing to all the people: as she said in her speech “those that vote for me and those who do not”. Had she chosen blue (the democratic color she would have alienated the republicans). White is a color of goodness; given her recent difficulties with emails, it would be in Hilary’s interests to appear. Wearing white can also be relevant because Hilary is the first presidential nominee. These are unchartered waters. But most importantly white signifies honesty, openness, comfort, peace and hope. Hilary’s speech was full of the positive hopeful future for all as opposed to fear and closed off words used by Trump. Also note that though the suit was white it was not a pristine cold white that could appear distant, rather it was a warmer more approachable white.

Whatever her reasons for wearing white, I am sure it was chosen very carefully with a great amount of thought. So the next time you are speaking in front of people give thought to the color you wear and the message you want to send to your audience about yourself.

The Dreaded Changing Room

Before going shopping and setting yourself up for mental anguish and beating yourself up about what you see in the mirror in the changing room, the best thing you can do is to know your body type. Different clothes and material are more flattering if on the proper body type. To find your body type, take measurements  ( or with the help of a trusted friend) of your shoulders, bust,  waist, and hips. This will help ;you determine what body shape you are.

A triangular shape is where the shoulders are more narrow than the hips:

An inverted triangle is where the shoulders are broader than the hips

A round body shape has similar shoulders and hips with more weight carried in the middle.

A rectangular ( or athletic) has similar bust waist and hips

The hourglass shape has shoulders and hips of similar measurements with a defined waist.

The idea is to bring balance to  the proportions of your body. If you are small on the upper half then look for clothes that will draw the eyes up. If you have an athletic figure, then look for clothes that will create a waist or belt it. If you are smaller on the bottom choose items with fullness. If you have an hourglass figure then you are fortunate because the majority of clothes  will be flattering.  Knowing your body type not only will help you choose the right clothes for yourself it will save you time by eliminating what  will not be flattering or worse buying something and getting home only to think ” what was I thinking”

Whatever body type you are, the idea is to love your body, making it look great in clothes, resulting in more confidence and feeling better about yourself. There is a definite mind and body connection here because the way we look affects how we feel and what we believe about ourselves. So the next time you need to try on clothes, know your body type , choose clothes for your body and be confident that you will be looking great.

White Elephant

Fashion is fickle which causes people to be so ….or the other way around.  From as long as I can remember I disliked white shoes to the point I thought it should be considered a crime to wear them and they should not exist.  As much as I like white for clothes I couldn’t like white shoes and sandals. Thanks to the likes of Victoria Beckham and others ( Gigi Hadid et al) I find myself rethinking white. Seeing the ubiquitous white running shoes with everything from shorts to dresses they started to look ok. I thought they were for the younger crowd and then Victoria Beckham ( whose fashion sense I love) began wearing them and making them look really good, I thought i would venture .  I love the look. Fun, comfortable and relaxed. I’m also adjusting to white sandals . White boots? Dont think so.

All for One

Jumpsuits (or onesies) have come back strong and I couldn’t be happier. I love them. They’re easy to wear, very flattering ,fun and versatile. You can dress them up or down depending on the occasion. They’re one of the biggest trends you will see this year. Some of the most beautiful are for evening ( instead of a cocktail dress) . Coming in a range of styles and prices everyone can enjoy them. Taking them  a step further, Fall/ Winter 2016 showcased the unitard, though more difficult to wear. So it looks like the jumpsuit will be here for a while. Yaaay.
